Liwonde National Park is the best known of the nine national parks and wildlife reserves in Malawi. There is ample game along the Shire River and there are safaris on offer by boat, 4x4 or on foot. Watching game while riding, driving or walking is said to be one of the best bird watching experiences in Africa. The accommodation beside the River Shire is uncommercialised, yet comfortable and peaceful. Between game viewing and bird watching there is more than enough to see.
The river attracts fish eagles and weaver birds that build their nests in the thin woodland and Pel’s fishing owl is seen at dusk along the river’s edge. The area encompasses riverine swamps, deciduous woodland and open grassland. There are about 500 species of fish seen in the Lake Malawi National Park is unequalled anywhere else in the world. Liwonde National Park is 220 sq miles (580 sq km) and the River Shire flows along its western border. Liwonde is most pleasant between the cooler months of June to August and the dry season continues up until November with river trips to remember.
